2009 Fantasy Man Early Expert Mock Draft

A few weeks ago I participated in the Fantasy Man's Early Expert Mock Draft. I went in without any real strategy in mind. I planned to make some out of the box picks and see what the reaction was like. I think I finished with a very solid squad that has more upside potential than most. The Fantasy Man has a post on his blog that has collected the thoughts of a few of the experts.

I am very curious to hear your thoughts.

  1. WOW! That's an amazing team! Too bad it was a "mock" draft. I had Dioner Navarro last season, that guy will be amazing very soon. The only two people on your team that I questioned were Adrian Beltre and Cliff Lee. I'm not completely sold on Cliff Lee EVEN THOUGH he got the Cy young and had one of the best seasons I've ever seen. I just don't see him coming close to what he did last season and the same goes for Beltre but they both have huge upside! What was the order in which you drafted these guys?

  2. Thanks for the response. You can see the draft order here:

I like Beltre a lot going into his free agent season. Remember the last time?

I also think that Cliff Lee is for real. A lot of people have forgotten how highly touted he was as a prospect. There also isn't anything in the stats that screams fluke (maybe a mild suggestion or two) I like him to have a strong follow up even if it isn't a Cy Young follow up.

  3. Fantasy titles are built on finding gems like Cliff Lee, who do you see as being a potential ace like he was this year? I live in Chicago and was wondering about Rich Hill. Hill had a good year 2 years ago, was sent to the minors, and now is being forgotten (like Lee 3 years ago). Do you see any comparisons like that?

  4. I like Rich Hill a lot but I'm afraid it doesn't look like he'll get much of an opportunity with Chicago this spring. If he finds a spot somewhere he would be a top sleeper for me.

In the Cliff Lee vein I like Phil Hughes, Andrew Miller, Clay Buchholz, and Johnny Cueto. Last year I picked guys like Cliff Lee, Jonathan Sanchez, Jon Lester, and Jake Westbrook - not a perfect list I guess but not too bad.

Every year I do my All-Sleeper Team predictions, so that's something to look for i the coming weeks.

  5. That seems odd doesn't it? I'm not sure what happened there. I certainly didn't notice it back in November.
